RCUK School-University Partnerships Initiative: Connecting Schools and Universities Together

Connecting schools with cutting edge research and researchers can inspire and motivate young people. There is evidence that bringing contemporary research into the classroom is of key importance, as researchers can act as positive role models for young people and expose students to exciting future study and career options, motivating students to improve grades and raise ambition. Research Councils UK (RCUK) is therefore delighted to have recently announced the "RCUK School-University Partnerships Initiative" (SUPI) to inspire young people from a diversity of backgrounds to pursue relevant studies beyond 16, and follow research and development careers to help secure and sustain a supply of future researchers, which is critical to the UK economy. RCUK's aim is to encourage universities to build on existing engagement opportunities so that they work more strategically and on a longer-term basis with schools in their area. Twelve successful applicants were selected from universities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and each project differs in the programme of activities that they will deliver. The projects officially began on 1st January 2013 and will run for three years. In addition to the benefits to young people, RCUK believes that teachers will benefit in terms of increased confidence and knowledge when dealing with some of the more challenging areas of the curriculum.
