Ten Tips for Tackling Tough Conversations
Novick, Brett
Educational Leadership, v72 n7 p80-81 Apr 2015
Difficult conversations--we've all experienced them, both in and out of school. Instead of procrastinating, or sidestepping them, or, worse, botching them up entirely, we can thoughtfully and effectively address conflict when the stakes and tensions are high. The author, a school counselor and practicing marriage and family therapist, lays out 10 crucial guidelines. He suggests, for example, that we consider where people will sit. Instead of having people face one another across the table, in the fashion of adversaries, he suggests a different configuration. "It's much harder to be defensive," he writes, "if the person who's leading the tough conversation is sitting next to you as an ally."
