Framing Discussions about Teaching

Danielson's Framework for Teaching has provided a common language for discussions of teaching practice for almost 20 years. Many educators love the Framework's comprehensiveness; they find the specific language to be useful as they strive to improve their practice. For other educators, however, the Framework's 22 components and 76 smaller elements are just too much. They find that the Framework encompasses too much detail to permit focus on the important ideas about teaching. To respond to this need, Danielson introduces a revised organization of the Framework, which she believes will help structure professional conversations even better than the original. The streamlined Framework rearranges the components of teaching into six clusters: (1) clarity of instructional purpose and accuracy of content; (2) safe, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environment; (3) classroom management; (4) student intellectual engagement; (5) successful learning by all students; and (6) professionalism.
