Where Do I Go from Here: Developing a Senior Capstone Course for Music Education Majors
Glen, Nancy
Contributions to Music Education, v40 n1 p147-161 2014-2015
The purpose of this article was to discuss capstone courses in higher education, and the need for a stand-alone capstone course within the Bachelor of Music Education degree program. Review of literature showed a strong movement toward identifying and serving unique needs of senior students as they prepare to student teach and graduate. Their needs can be met through a variety of activities that prepare them to make the transition from student to teacher, reflecting upon and integrating information they have learned throughout their undergraduate program. Pursuant to this, the author has made a case for using a Discipline-Based Transitional Capstone model in the Bachelor of Music Education degree program to achieve these goals. The elements and implementation process of a Transitional Senior Capstone course are described in the article.
