Exploring Awareness of Online Reading Strategies Used by EFL Learners in a Developing Country: A Study on Undergraduate Students in Bangladesh

Information and Communication Technology plays an increasingly important role in the lives of learners around the world. The opportunity to seek information through computer has made reading an important language skill. In this hi-tech era, students of undergraduate programs should have high reading ability to comprehend knowledge available online in the form of electronic journals, online database, electronic newspapers and so on. This reading ability can be improved through developing appropriate online reading strategies. Despite the importance of online reading, little research has been conducted to study online reading strategies used by undergraduate students of developing countries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness of reading strategies of EFL undergraduate students in a developing country like Bangladesh. The participants were 227 EFL students from two unique disciplines of Khulna University and Military Institute of Science and Technology in Bangladesh. The instrument employed was the Online Survey of Reading Strategies (OSORS) by Anderson (2003). The result of the study reveals that as a whole there was a moderate level of awareness of all strategies but found more awareness for Problem Solving strategies. There were very little differences observed between 1st year and 4th year students but no significant difference in respect of gender. With a further analysis, statistically significant differences were observed between the students of Social Sciences (BBA) and the other discipline--Science and Technology (CSE).
