Uplifting Leadership
Hargreaves, Andy; Boyle, Alan
Educational Leadership, v72 n5 p42-47 Feb 2015
To find out how organizations turn failure into success, Andrew Hargreaves and his colleagues studied more than 15 business, sports, and education organizations. They found that the secret to these organizations' success came down to just two words: uplifting leadership. Uplifting leadership, write Hargreaves and Boyle in this article, raises the spirits, hopes, and performance of the stakeholders in the community. Uplifting leadership is a journey--a narrative quest that people pursue together to be part of something greater than themselves. Using one case study from sports (the Vancouver Giants hockey team) and one from education (Hackney Schools Borough in London, England), the authors illustrate how the six components of uplifting leadership combine the hard and soft skills that are often set against each other in traditional leadership practice: counterintuitive thinking combined with disciplined application; dreaming with determination; collaboration with competition; metrics with meaning; pushing and pulling people into change; and long-term sustainability with short-term success.
