Student Interest in International Education at the Community College
Robertson, Jennifer J.
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v39 n5 p473-484 2015
The goal of internationalization of higher education is to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be competent global citizens of the 21st century. The proliferation of research on the topic over the last three decades demonstrates its increased importance, yet the literature concerning internationalizing initiatives at the community college is still lacking. To better understand the community college student in the context of international education, this study examined students' interest in global topics and internationalized activities, the extent to which students have a global perspective, and the academic and personal experiences that might contribute to having a high score on a global perspective scale. The results of this study revealed that there was not a strong interest among the majority of community college students in international education, but for those with a strong interest, there were common academic and personal experiences found. Considering the findings, it is important for community colleges to develop a comprehensive internationalization strategy that involves outreach to students' families, increasing access to study abroad, and expanding efforts to internationalize the campus and the curriculum in order to achieve the goal of global citizenship.
