Fostering Fellowship: Church Participation of Students Living on Campus
Donahoo, Saran
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v41 n1 p178-191 2014
Participating in religious services has many benefits for college and university students. In this study, I examined qualitative data provided by college students regarding what they value and gain by participating in religious services. While the 58 student participants resided on campus at the time of data collection, they attended off-campus religious activities and services. Students valued the off-campus churches that they attended because these venues offered opportunities and activities for them to renew their religious faith, provided multigenerational family-like environments and support, and served as helpful sites where students could experience some separation from campus life. Residence life professionals seeking to support the religious needs of students can use this information to assist in identifying activities and organizations that provide religious experiences that meet students' needs and desires.
