The Claim of the Personal: Narratives and Reflections in a Time of Exposition
Weber, David
Independent School, v73 n2 Win 2014
In this article, the author describes the benefits of a program where he has taught for many years. It is a program that emphasizes personal narratives drawn from memory--and that also celebrates the personal essay, which usually incorporates narrative content. The article begins by addressing concerns expressed about this form of writing. It then demonstrates the kinds of writing that students' personal narratives and personal essays make possible. Finally, the author explains the developmental value of reflective writing and provides prompts for personal narratives.
