Make Friends with Student Data
Kajitani, Alex
Educational Horizons, v93 n2 p24-26 Dec 2014-Jan 2015
In this article, the author argues that student data is more than just test scores. Alex Kajitani notes that data matter because they provide crucial information to teachers that enable them to better serve their students. Teachers can use data to determine students' strengths and areas of need. The effective use of data means being able to determine what to teach and which students will need most intense focus. What exactly is data? Data is information--information that can be used to show that students are learning and where they need more help. After describing both qualitative and quantitative data, Kajitani explains how teachers can use student data to collaborate with other teachers, to help students understand themselves, and to set goals.
