Action Research on "Visible Learning" in Science
Paterson, David
School Science Review, v96 n355 p99-104 Nov 2014
"Visible teaching and learning" is an educational philosophy that makes the processes and endpoints in a classroom highly visible and understandable to all involved. This was translated into a series of lesson "roadmaps" for a group of chemistry students studying rates of reaction and reaction energetics. Their end-of-unit attainment and evaluations of this pedagogy showed significant gains in achievement, with increases in their confidence in lessons and in their independent learning. This account of this short action research project discusses the development and evaluation of the "roadmaps", and is presented as a possible model on which others could base investigation and development of their own teaching practice.
