Three Lessons on Parabolas--What, Where, Why
Ceyanes, Ben; Lockwood, Pamela; Gill, Kristina
Mathematics Teacher, v108 n5 p368-375 Dec 2014
In this article, Ceyanes, Lockwood, and Gill use "The Geometer's Sketchpad" in a sequence of algebra lessons to introduce quadratic functions as the product of two linear functions. The lessons provide an enriched look at the creation of parabolas and allow students to experience the foundational idea that all functions are connected. The authors believe that this strategy will benefit students as they transition into second-year algebra, where a multitude of functions awaits. They also address questions about parabolas to show how a more complete understanding of quadratics can be achieved through technology.
