Toying Around
Barnett, Ellen; Hanuscin, Deborah; Harman, Stephanie
Science Teacher, v80 n8 p50-53 Nov 2013
In this article the authors share a great activity for teaching the nature of science (NOS). Using a simple Amish pull toy to encourage a high school chemistry class to think about NOS, the authors realized that the activity not only highlighted scientific practices emphasized in the "Next Generation Science Standards" (Achieve Inc. 2013), but also provided a foundation for future investigations and conversations. It teaches students how scientific knowledge is developed and how they can participate in developing future ideas. This article explains how to lead the activity.
