Grab a MOOC by the Horns
Lokey-Vega, Anissa
Educational Leadership, v71 n8 p61-64 May 2014
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) have been barreling through the field of higher education since the first MOOC was launched in 2008. These free courses were initially believed to be a way to provide a high-caliber education to anyone with Internet access and a will to learn. Although research so far has shown that MOOCs aren't living up to those promises, Anissa Lokey-Vega believes that MOOCs related to education do have value for teacher professional development. She draws on her experience as a MOOC teacher and student to offer seven tips for district and school leaders who want to make MOOCs part of their professional development offerings: (1) Seek out the best MOOCs for your school goals; (2) Make a systemwide menu of MOOCs for professional learning; (3) Make the MOOC social by encouraging teachers to take them together; (4) Use the MOOC as a springboard for ongoing teacher learning; (5) Collect and analyze MOOC data; (6) Incorporate MOOC completion into teacher evaluation structures; and (7) Get in on the MOOC action by creating your own MOOC or seeking permission to adapt an existing MOOC.
