How to Write an Opinion Essay and Why You Should Do It Now
Gasman, Marybeth
Phi Delta Kappan, v96 n1 p28-29 Sep 2014
Educators often think of themselves as instilling ideas and learning in others through teaching and research. Teaching occurs inside classrooms or sometimes in hallways, and research is reported in academic journals or scholarly books. Most teachers say they care about making change in the nation and the world, but if they're only teaching in classrooms and publishing in scholarly outlets, is their influence really as significant as it could be? If educators hope to expand their influence, they must learn how to write op-ed and opinion pieces for both the education and the mainstream media. This article encourages educators to take a stand, and step outside their comfort zone. It also shares ideas on how to get started and how to follow through on writing opinion pieces.
