Raising the Bar for Peace and Sustainability Educators: An Educational Response to the Implementation Gap

Throughout history there has been no lack of evidence attesting to the inequitable distribution of wealth, power, and resources among individuals and groups, conditions which continue to characterize this second decade of the twenty-first millennium despite the many UN-based initiatives to deal with their consequences. Not included among the factors cited for explaining the persistence of these conditions is the ethical dimension, the absence of which leads to a gap between right thinking and responsible action. Recognizing the role of education to close this gap, this paper proposes that an ethical dimension be "explicitly" incorporated into those disciplines that educate for a sustainable peace. It will present a value-based ethical framework derived from the Earth Charter to guide such efforts.
