Faculty Development to Support Academic Advising: Rationale, Components and Strategies of Support
Hutson, Bryant
Journal of Faculty Development, v27 n3 p5-11 Sep 2013
There is much evidence that quality academic advising has a positive impact on college student's academic success. Faculty are often expected to serve as academic advisors to students, which appears to be an ideal practice given their frequent interactions with students and knowledge of academic programs. However, institutions rarely offer structured support or formal preparation for this faculty role, potentially negating any advantage this practice may impart. This article describes how faculty advising can have a significant positive impact on student achievement and discussed faculty development approaches that can support faculty in becoming more effective academic advisors.
