Using Visual Supports to Teach English Language Learners in Physical Education
Nguyen, Huong Tran; Watanabe, Megan Fujiko
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v84 n8 p46-53 2013
Twenty-five percent of students in the United States are children of immigrant parents, who are considered English language learners (ELLs). As a collective ELL group, their performance level on every measure from achievement scores to graduation rates tends to be lower than almost any other category of students. With over five million ELL students enrolled in U.S. schools, it is likely that teachers (including those in physical education [PE]) will, at some point in their careers, have taught at least one ELL student. The purpose of this article is to provide PE teachers with practical instructional strategies, such as visual supports, to foster ELLs' independent and group learning and to augment their chances for successful language development and participation in the PE classroom.
