Marcio Mugnol is a member of the distance education evaluation team on the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) board. He has delivered concurrent presentations in distance education and is currently researching the advancement of distance education in the Brazilian market. He is a specialist in business management from FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas) and has a Ph.D. in social sciences from UNICAMP (Universidade Estadual de Campinas). Dr. Mugnol serves as a distance education consultant implementing solutions related to infrastructure in organizations. Luis C. Almeida is an associate professor of communications media at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His research lies under the umbrella of communication education and game design. He is a TEDx speaker and is currently serving as an international columnist for the Brazilian newspaper "Investmentos e Noticias," where he writes about technology and education in America. In this interview, Almeida asks Mugnol to describe how he became involved in distance education, recent distant education projects he has worked on in Brazil, as well as the general state of distant education in Brazil. Mugnol also discusses the potential for the success of massive open online courses (MOOCs) in Brazil, and organizations in Brazil that focus on uniting and informing distance educators about the models of distance education. The Brazilian government's policy on education and its effect on distance education is also discussed.
