Simple Screening Test for Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm in the Middle School Athlete
Weiss, Tyler J.; Baker, Rachel H.; Weiss, Jason B.; Weiss, Michelle M.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v26 n6 p13-16 2013
This article recommends and provides results from a simple screening test that could be incorporated into a standardized school evaluation for all children participating in sports and physical education classes. The test can be employed by physical educators utilizing their own gym to identify children who demonstrate signs of exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) and who would benefit from additional consultation with their physician. It describes a study conducted on middle-school students, aged 11-15, of the use of a free running screening test in determining the presence of asthma. The findings suggest that screening for EIB in middle school-age children should be implemented. This is a critical period in a child's life when decisions to participate in athletics are made and essential skills are obtained. Conditioning, body image, and social networks are affected by the ability of a child to exercise.
