Building Better Relationships for Better Organizing
Gecan, Michael
Thought & Action, v29 p27-34 Fall 2013
As the co-director of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), a network founded by Saul Alinsky in 1940 that partners with faith and community-based organizations to improve local leadership and citizen-led action, the author has witnessed how power organizing can work. In the first few months of 2013, the author had been privileged to be part of a number of actions that would have seemed almost unimaginable 10 or 20 or 30 years ago. A few of those actions are described in this article. The article also describes four core habits of power organizing that are described in his book "Going Public: An Organizer's Guide to Citizen Action": (1) the habit of relating; (2) the habit of organization; (3) the habit of action; and (4) the habit of reflection.
