This article describes digital badging, which turns the traditional cloth badges into digital data with badges earned and stored online. It notes how digital badging systems help people issue and achieve learning challenges in a sequence such as this: (1) A badge issuer creates a challenge using an online badging tool such as P2PU.org, forallbadges.com, or the open-source Badg.us. Input into the badging program is the new skill to be learned, steps it may take to learn it, and a request for evidence of the new skill (video, photos, reflective writing, or observation are common); (2) A learner engages in the challenge. When completed, he/she submits the evidence; (3) The issuer reviews the evidence and issues a digital badge to the learner within the badging system; and (4) The learner imports his/her badges from multiple badging systems into their Mozilla Backpack, where they are sorted into displays. Admissions officers, employers, and interested parties can click on a badge to view the challenge and evidence, far richer information than a grade on a transcript can transmit. While digital badges can understand what people have learned, they also provide a sense of how attendees are experiencing the conference. The addition of badging into a conference opens the door to re-imagining how to assess and acknowledge learning.
