For BYOD, Please Say "Yes"
Kennedy, Sarah
Campus Technology, v26 n7 p18- 20 Mar 2013
The "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) wave has engulfed the campus, with students bringing their own devices into the classroom, and professors and administrators expecting access to e-mail and other applications from their preferred operating systems. While BYOD brings numerous benefits to campus users, it can be challenging from an IT support perspective. The Support Office manager at the University of York (UK) discusses the importance of fostering a culture that welcomes mobile devices on campus, while also setting realistic expectations. The University of York's Support Office helps students connect their personal devices to school services and systems, keep apps up-to-date, use antivirus software, and store data correctly. Presented are 4 tips for supporting BYOD: (1) You can't ignore BYOD, so embrace it; (2) Secure a defined policy and support from senior management; (3) Get the whole IT department involved; and (4) Train and support staff.
