Authentic Design in Gaming: Changing the Rules of Play

The article provides information on the changing rules in the authentic designs in gaming. It states that board games have been used to teach before a traditional classroom setting was ever put in place. It mentions that technology, engineering, and design education teachers would do well to develop their assignments to lead students into investigation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) areas for focal content for game design. It highlights that the Technology Student Association used board game creation to reach the specific learning needs of students with specific learning disabilities. It concludes that building board games is a valuable step in electronic game creation. For technology classrooms that thrive on low-tech approaches, the hands-on approach to modifying and eventually building a fully playable custom board game provides a creative outlet that is rewarding as well. It also allows students opportunities to research viable topics/themes for games as well as to understand and create complex games and rules prior to working in a digital environment. Presented herein is a brief in designing a board game for play and transferability. These include benchmarks for middle and high schools.(Contains 3 figures.)
