Toward an Alternative Learning Environment Interface for Learning Management Systems
Abdous, M'hammed
International Journal on E-Learning, v12 n1 p5-22 Feb 2013
An effective learning environment interface (LEI) is a means to enable students to focus on learning and to understand content, while establishing connections and relationships among course activities. Using this fundamental premise, we propose a flexible, user-centered, and seamless LEI which is intended to remediate the fragmented interface offered by most Learning Management Systems (LMSs). After discussing LMS benefits and drawbacks, and reviewing the educational significance of user interface design principles, we describe our LEI's features and components, and then discuss feedback collected from a population of RN-to-BS N students who used our LEI. Informal feedback reveals a high level of satisfaction from the students, particularly for the content structure, layout, and organization offered by our LEI. (Contains 6 figures and 2 tables.)
