Observing Cell Phone Use and Enhancing Collaborative Learning Using a Wiki

Cell phone use is evident in society. Individuals have cell phone conversations while waiting in line at the grocery store, glance at their cell phones during meetings, check Facebook while having dinner with friends, have a meaningful phone conversation with a parent, and even text while sitting in church service. This assignment provides students with the opportunity to observe cell phone use and reflect on their own behavior in a variety of contexts. Students analyze if the cell phone use illustrated communication competence. More specifically, was the communication appropriate and effective? Why or why not? Students document their observations and experiences in a formal paper. In addition, students post their findings in a wiki and identify key themes. This collaborative learning tool works well for this assignment because students are able to read each others' findings outside of the face to face classroom. Possible findings have included avoiding communication, texting as small talk, politeness violations, meaningful conversation, and fidgeting with your phone (in order to look busy). A list of references and suggested readings is included.
