Juggling Balls and Learning

How do you change a teacher’s mentality from seeing children as "just vases to be filled", to seeing them as "fires to be lit"? It seemed to the author that more consideration was being given to the learning process than to the learning emotions, that the feelings of the learner were being largely ignored. This seemed to be a serious omission, so the author devised an exercise for staff explaining that he wanted them to learn how to juggle balls by half-term. His intent was to start a dialogue that changed the way they viewed children’s learning. Through this exercise, teachers came to realize from personal experience that new learning is an emotional challenge as well as an intellectual and motor challenge. (Contains 1 note.)
