Physical Activity and Youth with Disabilities: Barriers and Supports
Block, Martin E.; Taliaferro, Andrea; Moran, Tom
Prevention Researcher, v20 n2 p18-20 2013
Physical activity and active use of leisure time is important for everyone but particularly important for youth with disabilities. Unfortunately, youth with disabilities often have a difficult time or are even excluded from participating in physical activity due to limited physical and cognitive skills, attitudinal barriers in the community, lack of appropriate programs, and lack of well trained and committed staff. The purpose of this article is to review the benefits of physical activity for youth with disabilities as well as barriers these youth often face that may prevent participation in physical activity. This will be followed by a discussion of an "empowerment model" that allows youth with disabilities to successfully participate in community physical activity programs by focusing on training of community recreation staff and support of this staff as well as youth with disabilities before and during activities.
