The Formation and Development of the Mindful Campus
DuFon, Margaret A.; Christian, Jennifer
New Directions for Teaching and Learning, n134 p65-72 Sum 2013
This chapter recounts the development of faculty and student groups whose purposes are to promote mindfulness and contemplative pedagogy on the California State University-Chico campus through work both on the campus and in the greater Chico community. The "Mindful Campus" a student organization formed in 2011, merged with the "Faculty Initiative for Transformative Learning" in order to unify faculty and student efforts. The Mindful Campus faculty-staff study group meets every two weeks for meditation, a short business meeting, a book discussion, and a short closing meditation. The group continues to work in cooperation with other groups on and off campus who share common goals of creating a more mindful, peaceful, and compassionate world. One project concerns creating dedicated space for silent reflection that would be available at any time during school hours to meditate, contemplate, or just find silence. The Mindful Campus continues its efforts toward raising awareness in the daily lives of faculty and students. The authors believe that mindful living and contemplative pedagogy have the potential to effectively enhance student learning and achievement, as well as foster an innovative environment that can create fuller and richer learning for students, greater satisfaction for educators, and a more nurturing environment in their university and community.
