Building a Green House in the Redwoods
Enos, David
Tech Directions, v72 n9 p21-25 Apr 2013
Designing and building homes is normally the responsibility of a professionally trained workforce. So a lot of people are skeptical about the idea of a team of high school students taking on those tasks. Would a young, untrained group of students be able to undertake and successfully complete the construction of an entire home, from start to finish? The Humboldt County Office of Education, located on the North Coast of California, has been supporting teams of teenagers who do just that. In fact, students attending classes in the Northern Humboldt Union High School District recently completed an ambitious two year model/demonstration house-building project. The energy-efficient house was designed in the drafting classroom and built on a site near the school by students enrolled in the county's Regional Occupational Program's building trades class. This article describes how they did it.
