Make-or-Break State Action
Wilhoit, Gene
Phi Delta Kappan, v94 n2 p47-49 Oct 2012
The executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers, who also is a former superintendent of education in Kentucky and Arkansas argues that successful implementation of the Common Core depends on adhering to two concepts: having an effect at scale and understanding that the effort ahead is a systems issue. This work depends on affecting the vast majority of teachers, schools, and districts across this country, he says. The cruelest thing we can do to teachers is to poorly prepare them for the challenge of the Common Core, isolate them in dysfunctional environments, and then blame them for mistakes made at the state level. Implementing the standards should be about state systems facing their shortcomings and about actionable plans that can be brought to scale.
