Checkpoints along the Road Less Travelled
Schrimpf, Mike
Principal Leadership, v13 n3 p22-26 Nov 2012
When St. Louis Charter School established the zero-tolerance approaches to discipline, school leaders thought that they were creating environments in which students could feel safe. As implemented, however, they alienated many students and families. As a school leader in search of an intentional school culture, the author realized that the path to changing culture is equally unique. Although every school's roadmap might look different, they should all have some similar checkpoints along the way--core considerations that all schools must address in designing the process of culture change. School leaders determined those checkpoints to be: assess the current culture; build a vision and monitor progress; teach, practice, repeat; and have a touchstone. A focus on teaching skills and fostering respect and responsibility changed the school for students and adults.
