MWCC Casts Its Vote for Democracy's Colleges
Forhan, Fagan
Community College Journal, v83 n2 p12-13 Oct-Nov 2012
With the presidential election just one month away, and contention between Democrats and Republicans at near stratospheric levels, now is the opportune time to engage community college students in the democratic process. While encouraging students to vote is important, effective civic engagement goes well beyond the ballot box; it requires a systemic approach--one that empowers students to voice their thoughts and opinions and emerge as leaders within their local communities. Public colleges and universities have a history of fostering civic engagement through service-learning opportunities, including internships and policy institutes. This article describes how Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC) in Gardner, Mass., showcases the importance of civic education. The college is leading efforts to integrate civic engagement learning into everyday practice at community colleges in a measurable and articulated way that will allow students to demonstrate growth.
