The View from the Trenches
Blanchette, Sue
Social Education, v76 n1 p4-6, 52 Jan-Feb 2012
Like many who entered the teaching profession in the 1970s, the author entered a profession that was in transition. Over the more than 30 years she spent in the classroom, the author has had a front row seat during this evolution. It has been a roller coaster ride at times, but she believes our schools will emerge stronger for it. Who we teach, what we teach, how we teach--these are areas that have seen the most extensive changes. The students who sit in our classrooms are a far cry from those of the past. They have been shaped by the political and social events of the last three decades. In this article the author discusses the changes that occurred over the last 30 years in the classroom. [This presidential address was delivered at the NCSS annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on December 2, 2011.]
