Becoming and Being a Mathematizing Mathematician
De Geest, Els
Mathematics Teaching, n231 p46-49 Nov 2012
What does "to be a mathematician" mean? What is implied, and what image is created of "a mathematician"? Are "mathematicians" members of an exclusive club? Are mathematicians different to "other people"? Are mathematicians different because they are able to mathematize? These might not be the most oft asked questions, but are they questions to which mathematics educators can hope to provide a convincing answer? The closing session of Conference 2012 offered delegates the opportunity to think about the issues through working on mathematical tasks in the context of enquiry. As a result, it is likely that the quest for answers will be a "personal journey" for those who engage in the process.
