Cooper, Kenneth J.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, v29 n20 p11-13 Nov 2012
Together, Samuel L. Myers Sr. and Jr. prove that the apple tree, when properly nurtured in the rich intellectual orchards of academia, will bear prime fruit that lands close to its roots. The Doctors Myers both earned bachelor's degrees from Morgan State University and then ventured to Boston for their Ph.D.s in economics. Though their specialties diverge, it is a notable distinction that both men would become economists. Myers Sr., 93, is a retired consumer economist, Myers Jr., 63, an applied micro-economist. In the way their careers have unfolded, there's even more in common between the son and the father, who is best known as the longest-serving president of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Education and a pioneering president of Bowie State University. They share a commitment to social justice, relentless pursuit of excellence and broad networks that have helped along the way.
