Lifting the Barriers in Science
Hainsworth, Mark
Primary Science, n125 p11-13 Nov 2012
Many think of intervention strategies in terms of literacy or mathematics, but the author believes such strategies are just as important in teaching science, particularly for those with English as an additional language (EAL). With the recent focus in England on inclusion, achievement for all, and the Government's personalisation agenda, it is sometimes difficult to know which strategies to use to help meet the needs of all the children, especially those with EAL. This is especially true in science because, unlike other core subjects, there are few published intervention strategies available. With this, the author decided to carry out his own small-scale study. The study has led to major changes in the way the author teaches and has helped him understand more about how bilingual children learn and what he needs to do to ensure that they have equal access to the curriculum. A list of references and further reading is included. (Contains 3 figures and 1 table.)
