When providing training to teachers struggling with the concept of forces, the author encourages them to start with something within the experience of the children they are teaching. For example, show them photographs taken on windy days, such as that of a tree, and ask them to explain what is happening. This encourages the children to focus on the details. Start by looking for change--how was the behaviour of the tree changed? When one can see where the change is, the rest of the picture can be ignored. This is the first stumbling block in talking about forces; most people tend to over-analyze a situation. It is easy to get carried away; forces never act alone! However, by focusing on a particular object, one can overcome this issue and can encourage a chain of questioning about "where" the change happened, "what" is causing the change, and "how" is it causing the change?. The real value of these activities is the development of the children's higher level thinking skills. (Contains 4 figures and 1 box.)
