Improving the Design of Workplace E-Learning Research
Dubois, Cathy; Long, Lori
International Journal on E-Learning, v11 n4 p419-440 Oct 2012
E-learning researchers face considerable challenges in creating meaningful and generalizable studies due to the complex nature of this dynamic training medium. Our experience in conducting workplace e-learning research led us to create this guide for planning research on e-learning. We share the unanticipated complications we encountered in our research and explain how they limited the conclusions we were able to draw from our research. The four areas we explore include: 1) applying relevant theory, 2) measurement considerations, 3) assuring a meaningful participant sample, and 4) reducing research participant attrition. Data collection in organizations presents challenges in each of these areas. We offer recommendations regarding how researchers can work with organizational representatives when planning their workplace e-learning research to avoid problems in each of these areas, and thereby improve the generalizability of their research. Finally, we discuss implications for practice associated with the recommendations we offer. (Contains 1 table.)
