Meeting the Demands of School Social Work Licensure with an Online Course
Powers, Joelle D.; Blackman, Kate F.; Shaffer, Garry
School Social Work Journal, v37 n1 p1-16 Sep 2012
School social work licensure in most states includes requisite course work often focused on school policy and child education. For working social workers who have decided to pursue necessary licensure to practice in a school setting after completing their master's or bachelor's degrees, accessing these required courses can create significant challenges in juggling work, families, and personal lives. Transportation and time are also common but considerable barriers for those in rural areas. This paper describes a pilot online school social work course designed to eliminate some of these barriers while meeting the requirements of state licensure. Current research concerning online education is reviewed, and the pilot course (content, student and instructor feedback, and recommendations for future development) is described.
