The Risks of Open Scholarship: Avoiding Irony in the Promotion of Technology for Scholarly Communications
Oliver, Martin
Educational Technology, v52 n6 p22-25 Nov-Dec 2012
Proposals for the development of open scholarship seem to offer a utopian vision of a democratic, participative educational future. However, a closer examination of the idea of scholarship shows that the use of technology is nothing new in this context--its involvement dates back decades, and its use varies in important ways from discipline to discipline. Consequently, there is a risk in over-generalizing the experiences of educational technology advocates to scholars working in other areas. Further, the need for open scholarship is established in part by claims that current scholarship is closed; however, this rhetoric is suspect, since both extremes can be shown to be over-simplifications. It is argued that we need to establish a dialogue between educational technologists and scholars in other areas, so that the idea of open scholarship can be developed and shared, not just propagated.
