The development of intellectual history as an institutionalized field of inquiry is briefly outlined. The task of the intellectual historian is to reconstruct the mind of an individual or of groups at the time when a particular event occurred or an advance was achieved for it is the human consciousness which connects the long-range factors and forces and the individual event.
