Values Education. ERS Information Aid
Paul J. Porwell
Online Submission
The purpose of this report is to provide a brief background on the current status on values teaching, to describe the two values education approaches most frequently appearing in recent educational literature (values clarification and cognitive development), to discuss methods of initiating values programs, to furnish examples of how schools are using different values programs in their curricula, and to offer a working bibliography on values education. Factors to consider in beginning a values education program include sourcing information and materials, gaining faculty and community cooperation, and discussing critical steps in developing, implementing, and evaluating the program. Values education programs in 15 U.S. school districts in 14 states are provided.
