Identifying Barriers to Study Abroad Program Participation

University administrators, industry professionals, and government leaders encourage college students to participate in study abroad programs. Despite an increase in the number of students going abroad, the percentage of students participating in global programs remain low. This study identified barriers to study abroad program participation at a large private university in the western United States. Guided by Hanvey's theory of global awareness, which maintains that valuable skills are developed through global experiences, this non-experimental, one-shot, cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data about students' intent to study abroad. Student participants were recruited via Facebook yielding 389 representative surveys. Independent samples t tests of that survey data revealed significant differences between students who are and students who are not intending to study abroad in timing issues, financial constraints, academic programming conflicts, previous international experience, global awareness, and project knowledge. This study includes a white paper that offers recommendations to officials at this university for developing viable study abroad programs, ones that acknowledge and alleviate those barriers to studying abroad. Such programs will ultimately assist students in acquiring valuable skills that can enrich their personal lives, engage in their communities, and compete in a global work environment.
