Experiences of High School Teachers and Administrators Regarding Suspension of African American Males

The large number of suspensions of African American high school males is one of the primary concerns facing high school administrators nationwide. At high schools in the southern United States, African American males are suspended at greater rates than their counterparts. Suspensions affect their levels of achievement, attitudes towards school, overall discipline, and perceptions of equity and trust in the educational process. The purpose of this case study was to explore high school administrators' and teachers' perspectives of school suspension experiences with African American high school males in one southern high school. Guided by the social learning theory, the research question focused on the experiences of teachers and administrators in the discipline suspension processes. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with a purposeful sample of 6 high school teachers and 2 administrators, and coded and analyzed for emergent themes. The findings revealed that teachers and administrators implement the code of discipline policy in variable ways and that African American high school males benefit from after-school programs such as character education programs by developing social, academic, and discipline skills. The findings of this study may be used for professional development for teachers and administrators regarding the use of culturally responsive strategies for high school students. Implications for positive social change include strategies teachers and administrators could use to reduce suspensions of African American high school males, which might facilitate their graduation from high school and subsequent entry into higher education or the workforce.
