Listening to Students and Faculty: The Value to Developmental Education Leaders
Clifton, Connie J.
ProQuest LLC, D.E.Lead. Dissertation, University of Charleston - Beckley
Helping students complete developmental course sequences and graduate from college is one of the biggest challenges facing community college leaders and educators. The majority of entering students need one or more developmental courses yet most of these students never finish the developmental sequence. Colleges are continuously developing new ways to help students succeed. It is relatively simple to determine the effectiveness of support programs and other interventions using quantitative data. What is missing from most studies is qualitative data collected from students who participate in such programs. It is the combination of the two that adds richness and depth to a phenomenon resulting in a better understanding of a multi-dimensional issue. This study collected such data as it related to an existing program at a community college in western Maryland. Critical to the study was listening to students as they articulated the ways in which they benefited from the program both cognitively and affectively. It is hoped that the data collected and the analysis conducted will inform executive leaders in the area of developmental education increasing degree completion rates at Allegany College of Maryland (ACM ) and perhaps other institutions.
