Theological Curriculum in Brazil: A Proposal from Latin American Theology and Critical Theory
Lopes, Cesar Marques
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Trinity International University
With a focus on Brazilian theological seminaries that self-identify as evangelical and which emphasize teaching, learning, and doing a contextually Latin American theology, this research inquiries into related theoretical fields in order to establish a framework from which these schools may further develop educational approaches more adequate to this specific form of contextual theology. The research is conceived as an interdisciplinary inquiry situated in the context of the Brazilian" evangelicalismo," which in its turn is intimately correlated with the historical, social, political, and theological Latin American context, this research seeks to establish connections between the following theoretical fields: (1) Latin American theology, seen as structure, content and context for Brazilian evangelical theological education; (2) critical theory, seen as an appropriate philosophical interlocutor for the development of an educational framework that aspires to stimulate a holistic or integral approach to Christian mission and spirituality, and; (3) curriculum studies, with an emphasis on critical pedagogy and its contributions to the field of curriculum, seen as the typically educational interlocutor that helps articulate such a framework. The research offers contributions to the three theoretical fields mentioned above in exploring their overlapping and articulation. It also offers contributions to Brazilian theological evangelical education both through exploring such overlaps, and especially with a proposal that advocates for the incorporation of a synthesis of methodological concerns and priorities of Latin American theology into the fabric of the theological curriculum.
