The Analysis of a Teacher Test Preparation Tutorial to Learner Test Scores: An Action Research Study
Mild, Toni L. Hittle
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Many Pennsylvania colleges and universities require that teacher candidates pass a standardized assessment in order to gain formal entry in to their education programs. Standardized tests are also required for Level I teacher certification within Pennsylvania. The initial assessment required of all Pennsylvania preservice teachers for certification is called the Pre-Professional Academic Performance Assessment, also known as the PAPA. The PAPA contains three different content modules: Reading, Writing and Math. A candidate must score at least 220 on each of the three modules in order to receive a passing score (Pearson Education, Inc., 2013). Research has shown that some preservice teachers are not passing the PAPA. Due to this, a test preparation program was created and implemented at a small liberal arts college located in Pennsylvania. The purpose of this quasi-experimental action research study was to determine if there was an impact on student achievement by analyzing test-takers posttest scores on the PAPA. Determination of impact was analyzed after use of a PAPA Preparation Tutorial intervention. Data suggests that there was no sufficient sample evidence to support the claim that the PAPA remediation program was effective in increasing students' scores nor was there sufficient evidence to support the claim that the PAPA remediation program was effective in increasing students' scores with regard to the treatment versus control groups. The lack of sufficient evidence within this study suggests the need for additional research to be completed in this area.
