The Effects of a Parent Component as Part of an IEP on Parental Involvement
Engler, Joseph R.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of South Dakota
This study investigated the effects of a parent component to the IEP on parental involvement. In sum, six participants were involved in the 19-21 week study. The six participants all had a child being served on an IEP. After baseline data was collected, parents met with school personnel to take a goal from the IEP and create their own objective to work on at home with their child. Parent involvement was measured across three phases by collecting frequency and duration data using the Progress Report Form. Additionally, qualitative data was gathered using a semi-structured interview. Results demonstrated a mean level increase in parental involvement for four of the six participants during the intervention phase. For the two participants that did not increase their mean level of involvement, failing to follow the directions on the Progress Report Form and sickness appear to account for the results. This suggests, with moderate certainty, that having parents create a parent goal and objective commensurate with the school may lead to increased levels of parental involvement. Consequently, indirect effects such as increased academic achievement, better communication with school personnel and a greater awareness of their child's IEP may have also resulted.
