Impact of Parent University on Parent Engagement and Student Achievement
Lawless, Watechia Evelyen
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lipscomb University
This research project examined the impact of Parent University on parental engagement and the factors that impact a parent's decision to become involved in their child's education. In addition, the aim of the research was to offer recommendations for improvement, so Parent University is able to enhance academic achievement within MNPS. The key findings of the study indicate that parental engagement is tied to parental self-efficacy but is directly impacted by specific opportunities to be more engaged. The current programming offered by Parent University has a positive impact on what parents perceive as their role in helping their students achieve. Parent University offers programming that increases parents' knowledge of how to help their children succeed at school. In addition, results show that Parent University has an impact on a family's decision to become involved. Attendance at Parent University events emphasizes the importance of being involved and how it can positively impact overall student success. Although students of families who have attended Parent University did not score statistically higher on achievement tests that measure overall student achievement, Parent University is making a positive impact in other areas. The researchers provide recommendations that will enhance the effectiveness of Parent University. Primary recommendations include adding staff to Parent University's current structure; expanding school-based programming within the district; improving the data management system; and establishing personal connections with more parents. Secondary recommendations include sponsoring district events, celebrating success of Parent Engagement programs, creating Parent Tube videos and Parent University Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), establishing partnerships with community members, and finally creating a VIP Parent Program in conjunction with a Parent Advisory Committee.
